Envisioning a Green Life: 10 ways you can make a difference

I brainstormed this list for the Moving Planet Montreal event on Sept 24th, 2011. I think that if a person can do all of these things, they are well on their way to living a very ‘green’ life!

Envisioning a Green Life

  1. Walk, jog, bike, skateboard, or rollerblade to commute or for fun. Be healthier and live longer!
  2. Take metro, bus, or rail. Not possible? Carpool. Not possible? Drive a moped or another micro-vehicle.
  3. Own a vehicle with a block heater? Get a block heater timer! (Can pay for itself in a couple months of use.)
  4. Winter: Wear heavier clothes indoors. Insulate. Pile snow against house during extreme cold. Build outdoor freezer. Leave hot water from shower or bath in tub till it cools, then drain.
  5. Summer: Open windows and roller shades for cool nighttime, close during midday and afternoon. Hang dry clothes. Wear light clothes.
  6. Eat more vegetables and less meat. Energy, water and land inputs for 1 kg of meat ~= 10 kg of vegetables. Eat socially. Have potlucks. Buy organic.
  7. Buy local foods, furniture, clothes, etc. Strengthen the local economy. Reject consumerism by focusing on what you truly value. Spend ethically.
  8. Renovate your home to be more energy efficient using healthy materials. Building? Build green, focusing on solar heat and light. Google: “Annualized geo-solar”
  9. Question all media you consume. Be conscious of propaganda, logical fallacies, and advertising. Educate yourself about what you care about!
  10. Get involved in your society. Democracy does not end at the ballot box. Learn and grow – bringing your society with you into a better future.

Now my version in broken French:

Imaginer une vie vert

  9. Question tous les médias que vous consommez.

  1. True what you are saying. However in my opinion, to get more people going “green” is to make them believe they help theirself by it. What i actually mean is:
Instead of telling someone to wear more cloathes indoor during the winder because that means less electricity/wood/enviromental effect. Tell them do this, because you are going to save quite some bucks on heating. Lets face facts, people these days prefer spending less on boring things and getting the opertunity of doing something fun with the spare money instead of actually thinking green.
Good article, and thanks for some of the tips, my personal nr 8.

    Greetings
